Everyone must wear a long sleeved top, long trousers with enclosed, flat-soled shoes.
Come and experience NZ's iconic Sugar Factory - be fully immersed in a working factory, walking through the plant and machinery with one of our expert tour guides:
- learn why this historical Birkenhead site was chosen to be the only sugar factory in NZ
- learn how raw sugar is processed to become the final product in our supermarkets
- taste test our delicious products and see the wondrous sugar mountain for yourself!
You will be taken around the site on the Chelsea Bay Train - but beware, there are 80 stairs to walk up and down as you walk through the factory, so unfortunately wheelchairs, crutches, walking sticks or pushchairs cannot be accommodated.
Key points to know about the Tour:
- The tour is one hour long
- Please check in at the reception desk 15 minutes prior to your tour time
- No phones/cameras are allowed on tour, we will provide keypad lockers for your belongings
- Minimum age is 5 years (no babies are to be carried or under 5's permitted) and children under 12 years must be accompanied by an adult
- 80 steps in total throughout the tour; they are in short sections (10-20 at a time) all with handrails - note: no walking sticks or walkers are permitted
- Bees are sometimes on site; please bring an Epi-pen if you require one
- Tour times vary daily, please use the calendar to see available times
- There is a maximum number of 18 adults per tour
- We will provide a safety vest, hairnet, helmet and glasses to wear on the tour
- Your skin must be covered to visit our factory - this means that you must come dressed in a long sleeved top, full-length trousers (or similar) and enclosed, flat shoes. In the unlikely event that you do arrive in the wrong dress code, we have a small supply of long-sleeved vests, over-trousers, socks and sand-shoes!
Good things to know about visiting Chelsea Bay:
Please allow plenty of time to find us and park. There's lots of free car parking, but it can get very busy during the holidays. We recommend using Google Maps to find Colonial Road
We strongly recommend that you book at table at our cafe, Sugar (click on Cafe link to book) as it can get very busy too.
We have a wonderful Interactive Zone/Room to explore and learn about Chelsea and to play a cool digital baking game, if you have time
There is a fantastic playground and lovely grass area to enjoy - with a weekend coffee cart if you are visiting then
